Gastrointestinal Pathology in Children with Lyme Disease

ABSTRACT  Ten children between the ages of 8 and 19 with Lyme disease presented with chronic gastrointestinal symptoms. Biopsy evidence of inflammation was found in the stomach, duodenum, and colon. Pathologies included gastritis, duodenitis, gastric ulcer, colitis and histopathology resembling Crohn’s disease.  Spirochetes with the microscopic appearance of Borrelia were found in five patients with chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. …
